Family Survival Weekend - Memorial Day Weekend - May 25 to 28 - (Barnegat, NJ)

Our long weekend programs are a great way to introduce the whole family to the wonders of survival and develop meaningful connection to and confidence in nature. We cover the basic skills of shelter, water, fire, and food as well as increase enjoyment and comfort in nature through awareness activities and games.

Because of the long weekend we are able to cover enough of what is included in the Family, Youth and Teen Experience that we will allow this class to be used as the prerequisite course for our advanced summer classes. So if you’ve got your eye on an advanced class but can’t attend for two weeks during the summer, this is a great opportunity.

Ages and Prerequisites

Families with children age 4 on up! Children younger than 4 years old are welcome as long as guardians supervise them at all times. This program is designed for families to attend together and is open to youth and teens.

Parents or guardians must participate in the program with their children. During the program, kids are with their parents/guardians most of the time and older teens may go on more challenging adventures. No former experience is necessary.

Space is limited and there is no fee as you work for COTEF and room and board is provided. You must have previously taken each course for which you apply.

Ages 4 to 17
Guardians allowed.

This is a beginning class with no prerequisites. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a guardian. Children younger than 4 years old are welcome as long as guardians supervise them at all times.

Our modern society is so fast paced and time driven that it can be difficult to slow down and walk with the rhythm of the day. What would it be like if the sun were your clock, the birds your internet, and you felt at home in nature?

Our Family, Youth and Teen Experience class allows for a sense of timelessness, where families and individuals can share meaningful experiences which foster curiosity, appreciation, and respect for the Earth and each other.

Participants will learn survival skills in a manner similar to the way Stalking Wolf taught Tom Brown Jr. These skills include tracking, shelter building, friction fire techniques, water collection and purification, edible/medicinal and utilitarian plants, primitive cooking, bird language, and much more!

Ages 13 to 17
Guardians not allowed.

This advanced week-long course for teens focuses on the Apache Scouts’ way of life. Here, we begin to understand what it means to become the eyes and ears of the people as Grandfather Stalking Wolf and his people taught. This encompasses learning more advanced shelter and fire techniques, animal forms, martial arts study, tracking, invisibility, physical and spiritual workouts, group dynamics, and most importantly, awareness.

This class approaches these skills through a series of unique games and challenges in which students develop as an individual, but also as part of a greater team.

Teen Survival Quest in the Pine Barrens! - July 29 to August 3 - (Waretown, NJ)

Ages 13 to 17
Guardians are not allowed.

This course is for advanced students who have completed a minimum of two of our courses or the equivalent. The Teen Survival Quest immerses students in nature for an extended time period with three main areas of focus.

Preparation: We start with preparation for the trip. We will smoke meat, fish, make bags, practice bow-drill fire making, and create natural cordage…and more.

Wilderness Living: Semi–survival living with dried meat, fruit, and nuts. This second section of the course deals with semi-survival living, building light-weight summer shelters, gathering wild plant foods, and fishing.

Group Survival: The third and last leg of the journey is a group “quest” where we go out with very little gear and modern equipment and allow ourselves to fully surrender to the land. We wander together as a tribe, eating wild edibles, tracking animals, and losing sense of time and place. We find that we can gather “energy” from the land in many forms and get a peek at Grandfather’s world!

Note: No animals are taken except for fish. We do set non-lethal traps and students are rewarded with food which is carried in. Students are given plenty of water and a small amount of food during their Wilderness Living experience and then source these necessities from the landscape during Group Survival. Students work closely with our staff during the entire program.

This course is an amazing opportunity for teens and instructors alike to dive deep into Tom’s teachings and really live it!

Tapping into “the force” has never been so fun! This class brings some of the spiritual skills Tom Brown Jr. teaches at his adult Tracker School to our youth, teen, and parent groups. Students spend the week learning about Grandfather’s worlds and our ability to walk within them.

We explore the sacred silence, uncover methods for increasing awareness, and learn techniques for becoming one with the Earth and all things. Tom passed on these teachings tailored to the way Grandfather taught him as a child.

This is a very hands-on course loaded with games and challenges to cultivate awareness and imagination!

There are no prerequisites for this program.

Camp Ludington is a Girl Scout camp, in Holmes, NY, that we rent in the summer. It is a beautiful location with a lake and interesting rock formations. We eat in the main building which has a large dining hall, nature museum, library, and school store. There is a separate building for medical purposes.

Everyone sleeps in canvas tents on wooden platforms that have cots and mattresses for 4-5 people. Families can stay in their own tent if they choose.
