Fire and Stone


Program Description:
 Two of the most defining features of the human species have been the creation of stone tools, and the domestication of fire.  The ancestors of every person alive today learned and lived these skills, always improving, in order to keep themselves and their families alive.  We are the direct result of their curiosity, intelligence and dedication towards understanding the magic of fire and the secrets held within stone.  In this week long class, we will focus on flint knapping and practicing fire making methods.  We will create and use stone tools such as, blades, choppers, burins, arrowheads, drill points, and scrapers and practice fire making in ways such as, bow drill, hand drill, pump drill, fire saw, crutch drill, and strap drill.  We will explore these two gifts from the Earth, and our ancestors, seeing how they are connected and apply to other skills.  This will challenge you and bring new appreciation and understanding to fire and stone. 

Ages and Prerequisites:
 
Ages 12-17 and Family 

Students must have completed the Family, Youth or Teen Experience or equivalent.

Date/Location:

August 6-11

 Holmes, NY- Camp Ludington

Fees:   

$750 for first person            
$650 for each additional family member from the same household

Deposit:            $200 per person.  
Balance:           The balance must be paid in full before attending the program.                       






Bridge Program:  If you will be staying for more than one week and would like to stay at 
camp between programs the following fees cover from noon on Friday until the next program begins on Sunday. 

     
 Youth or Teen:  $95 for Bridge Program (for unaccompanied minors)
     
 Family:  $50 per person (includes food and camping only, no supervision or programming)


How to Register

Online Registration

Complete the forms for your family online and pay by credit card. You may choose to pay a deposit now and the balance two weeks prior to the camp or the full fee at this time. Note, all online class deposits are $200 per person, regardless of the program. Once you select your program you can choose to add the Bridge Program if applicable. Please note, there is a fee charged at the time of registration for using the online service. You can complete all necessary documents online. Please note however, that those attending the summer programs in Holmes, NY must have the medical form signed by a physician prior to coming to camp.
